Determination of eye irritation potential of low-irritant products: comparison of in vitro results with the in vivo draize rabbit test BABT
Nóbrega,Andréa Martins da; Alves,Eloisa Nunes; Presgrave,Rosaura de Farias; Costa,Rodrigo Netto; Delgado,Isabella Fernandes.
In an attempt to build the evaluation strategies to assess the human eye irritation, a reassessment of some in vitro tests is necessary, particularly concerning the non-irritants, mild and moderate irritants. Thus, the correlations between results obtained from the Draize test with the in vitro methods HET-CAM (Hens Egg Test-Chorion Allantonic Membrane) and RBC haemolysis assay to assess the ocular irritancy potential of 20 eye drops were examined. Parameters such as accuracy (%) and specificity (%) were determined. All results were correlated with RBC correctly with the results obtained in the Draize test. The HET-CAM presented four false-positive results, showing a tendency of data overestimation. Despite the high specificity provided mainly by the RBC,...

Determination of logs moisture by different methods PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Donato, Danilo Barros; Castro, Renato Vinícius Oliveira; Carneiro, Angélica de Cássia Oliveira; Carvalho, Ana Márcia Macedo Ladeira; Pereira, Bárbara Luísa Corradi; Oliveira, Aylson Costa; Barbosa, Conrad Julião.
The aim of this study was to compare three alternative methods to determine the moisture content of wood logs with the method recommended by ABNT. The moisture content of the wood was determined in a sawdust sample and with a electric meter capacitive. it was also determined the moisture content of a disk sample using the method recommended by ABNT. Using the regression model, all the methods were statistically similar. It was concluded that the use of alternative methods for determining the moisture content of wood in logs is feasible, to substitute the traditional method, but corrections must be implemented.

Evaluation of the PetrifilmTM EB and TEMPO® EB systems with ISO 21528-2:2004 method for the count of Enterobacteriaceae in milk BJM
Cirolini,Andréia; Miotto,Marília; Machado,Fernanda Morgana; Silva,Helen Silvestre da; Ogliari,Paulo José; Vieira,Cleide Rosana Werneck.
The development of alternative microbiological techniques is driven by the necessity to meet the current needs to deliver rapid results in the manufacturing process of foods, but it is important that these methods be evaluated for each application. The objective of the present study was to assess the PetrifilmTM EB and the TEMPO® EB systems with ISO 21528-2:2004 for the count of Enterobacteriaceae in pasteurized and UHT milk samples. We analyzed the microflora of 141 pasteurized milk samples, 15 samples of artificially contaminated pasteurized milk and 15 samples of artificially contaminated UHT milk. Investigation of the method PetrifilmTM EB and ISO 21528:2 regression analysis showed a high correlation in the samples, r = 0.90 for the microflora of...

Numerical procedure for estimating temperature in solarized soils PAB
Tiba,Chigueru; Ghini,Raquel.
The objective of this work was to develop a simplified numerical procedure for the estimation of accumulated monthly hours of solarized soil temperatures. The proposed model requires monthly means of daily solar radiation and maximum air temperature as input data, and a daily pattern of temperature variation assumed to be sine-shaped. The procedure was verified using observations made during the years 1992 and 1993 in Jaguariúna, SP. The proposed procedure can predict monthly temperature hours at 10 cm depth in the solarized soil, with acceptable accuracy, in the region for which it was developed.

Performance of two alternative methods for Listeria detection throughout Serro Minas cheese ripening BJM
Mata,Gardênia Márcia Silva Campos; Martins,Evandro; Machado,Solimar Gonçalves; Pinto,Maximiliano Soares; Carvalho,Antônio Fernandes de; Vanetti,Maria Cristina Dantas.
ABSTRACT The ability of pathogens to survive cheese ripening is a food-security concern. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the performance of two alternative methods of analysis of Listeria during the ripening of artisanal Minas cheese. These methods were tested and compared with the conventional method: Lateral Flow System™, in cheeses produced on laboratory scale using raw milk collected from different farms and inoculated with Listeria innocua; and VIDAS®-LMO, in cheese samples collected from different manufacturers in Serro, Minas Gerais, Brazil. These samples were also characterized in terms of lactic acid bacteria, coliforms and physical-chemical analysis. In the inoculated samples, L. innocua was detected by Lateral Flow System™ method with...
